Challenging Small Business Lenders: Focus on Client Needs Beyond Specialization

The non-bank, small business lending landscape is dominated and specialists, each boasting expertise in a particular niche. Yet, amidst this specialization frenzy, a crucial question emerges: Are lenders truly serving the holistic needs of their clients?

Here’s how two lenders went beyond their specialty to serve greater capital needs, drive more fee income and establish customer loyalty.

Example 1: Working Capital and Real Estate Solution

In one instance, a small manufacturing company was seeking to expand its operations by acquiring a larger facility to accommodate increased production demands. The company approached the lender solely for assistance in securing a commercial real estate loan. However, upon deeper discussion, the lender recognized the need for working capital to support the transition period and sustain operations during the expansion phase.

By leveraging their extensive network and expertise, the lender orchestrated a comprehensive solution. They secured a competitive loan package for the real estate acquisition while simultaneously arranging a flexible working capital line of credit. This approach not only facilitated the acquisition of the new facility but also provided the necessary financial cushion to ensure smooth operations during the transition.

The CEO of the manufacturing company remarked, “The lender’s holistic approach was a game-changer for us. Not only did we secure the perfect space for our growing business, but we also had the working capital needed to hit the ground running. It saved us from the stress of piecing together separate financing solutions or struggling with inefficient bank borrowing.”

Example 2: Equipment Finance and Real Estate Solution

In another scenario, a technology company was poised for rapid expansion, necessitating both a larger office space and updated equipment to support their innovative projects. Initially, the startup approached the lender solely for assistance in securing a commercial real estate loan to accommodate their growing team.

Recognizing the intertwined nature of the startup’s real estate and equipment needs, the lender proposed a comprehensive capital solution. They facilitated a competitive loan for the office space acquisition while concurrently arranging equipment financing tailored to the startup’s technological requirements.

The startup’s CTO expressed gratitude, stating, “The lender’s approach went beyond our expectations. We secured a facility built to securely house our server infrastructure with room for growth, but we also obtained the cutting-edge equipment essential for our client’s growing data storage needs. It streamlined the entire process and enabled us to focus on driving our business forward.”

In both examples, the lender’s holistic approach to addressing both real estate and complementary capital needs proved instrumental in empowering small businesses to achieve their growth objectives seamlessly. By understanding the intricacies of each client’s operations and capital requirements, they were able to deliver tailored solutions that made a tangible difference in their success.
