More Data on the Manufacturing Opportunity for Brokers in 2024

Were you aware that more than 90% of manufacturers in the United States employ fewer than 20 individuals? Moreover, according to surveys conducted by Secured Research encompassing more than 1,600 manufacturing companies with less than 50 employees, 77% of these small businesses demonstrated a heightened inclination towards financing equipment through avenues other than their deposit banks compared to 2017.

The landscape of U.S. manufacturing investment has experienced remarkable growth since 2021. This surge can be attributed to a confluence of factors including the imperative of re-shoring, government incentives and the availability of low-cost, free-flowing capital.

For smaller manufacturers, the imperative to invest in new production equipment has intensified due to labor shortages and the need to remain competitive. Yet securing the requisite working capital has become increasingly challenging. With banks tightening their credit standards, these manufacturers might lose access to the capital required to fuel their growth. This situation presents a significant opportunity for commercial finance brokers to carve out a specialized niche.

The study conducted by Secured Research revealed several key insights:

  • Only 26% of respondents expressed confidence in their bank lines to support their growth plans adequately
  • A staggering 79% perceived a lack of flexibility in bank lending for equipment, hindering their ability to undertake new investments
  • Merely 6% cited higher rates as a deterrent to investment in growth
  • An overwhelming 77% indicated a willingness to explore solutions from independent finance companies for working capital, equipment financing or commercial real estate funding

Despite a prevailing belief among many brokers that manufacturing ventures were beyond their purview due to their perceived size and complexity, the reality suggests otherwise. The abundance of small manufacturers in the U.S. presents a substantial opportunity for brokers to offer creative capital solutions, particularly when the demand for such resources is at an all-time high.

The question remains: Can brokers step in to bridge this crucial gap?
