Sandhills Global: Asking and Auction Values for Trucks & Trailers Decline Y/Y

Sandhills Global released its November 2024 Truck/Trailer Report, showing year-over-year decreases in asking and auction values for used semitrailers, heavy- and medium-duty trucks, and lifts.

U.S. Used Semitrailers

  • Inventory levels in the U.S. semi-trailer market decreased by 1.33% M/M in November but were up 6.73% Y/Y. Flatbed trailers posted the largest M/M inventory decrease at 3.7%, but also showing the largest Y/Y inventory increase at 23.08%.
  • Asking values in this market decreased by 1.39% M/M, now trending down for 29 consecutive months, and were down 18.58% Y/Y. Drop deck trailers showed the largest M/M asking value decrease at 2.46%, while reefer trailers posted the largest Y/Y asking value decrease at 27.07%.
  • Auction values in the U.S. semi-trailer market were up 0.57% M/M, but down 16.53% Y/Y, continuing a downward trend for 27 consecutive months. Reefer trailers showed the largest Y/Y auction value decrease at 33.44%.

U.S. Heavy-Duty Trucks

  • Inventory levels in the U.S. heavy-duty truck market have been trending downward for several months. In November, inventory decreased by 2.28% M/M and 11.19% Y/Y. The sleeper truck category showed the largest M/M inventory decrease, down 4.94%, and also posted the largest Y/Y inventory decrease, down 33.67%. In contrast, day cabs observed a 27.35% increase in inventory compared to the previous year.
  • Asking values in this market have been trending downward for over two years. In November, asking values increased slightly by 0.83% M/M but were down 13.25% Y/Y. While asking values for sleeper trucks increased 1.65% M/M, asking values for day cabs decreased 14.04% Y/Y.
  • Auction values in the U.S. heavy-duty truck market have also been trending downward. In November, auction values increased slightly by 0.81% M/M but were down 17.84% Y/Y. The day cab truck category showed the largest M/M auction value increase, up 2.74%, and also posted the largest Y/Y auction value decrease, down 21.02%.

U.S. Used Medium-Duty Trucks

  • Inventory levels in the U.S. medium-duty truck market have been trending upward, with a 0.22% increase M/M and an 8.33% increase Y/Y in November. The medium-duty box truck – moving category saw the largest M/M inventory increase, at 15.62%, while the medium-duty box truck – reefer category had the largest Y/Y inventory increase, at 130.2%.
  • Asking values in this market have been trending downward for nearly two years, with a 1.08% decrease M/M and a 12.62% decrease Y/Y in November. The medium-duty cab & chassis truck category saw the largest Y/Y asking value decrease, at 18.01%.
  • Auction values in the U.S. medium-duty truck market have also been trending downward for nearly two years, with a 2.56% decrease M/M and a 23.3% decrease Y/Y in November. The medium-duty box truck – reefer category saw the largest M/M auction value decrease, at 4.13%, while the medium-duty box truck – dry cargo-delivery category had the largest Y/Y auction value decrease, at 28.1%.

U.S. Used Lifts

  • Inventory levels in the U.S. used lifts market have been trending upward for 9 consecutive periods. In November, inventory increased by 3.58% M/M and 19.58% Y/Y. The used telehandler category posted the largest M/M inventory increase at 6.41%, while the used rough terrain scissor lift category showed the most significant Y/Y increase at 49.4% but was followed by telehandlers at an increase of 41.10% Y/Y.
  • Asking values in this market have decreased sharply in November, down 5.84% M/M, and are trending downward. Asking values were also down 11.17% Y/Y. The used telescopic boom lift category posted the largest M/M asking value decrease at 10.04%, while the used telehandler category showed the most significant Y/Y decrease in asking values at 13.01%.
  • Auction values in the U.S. used lifts market decreased by 4.58% M/M and 13.96% Y/Y in November and are trending downward. The used telescopic and articulating boom lift categories posted the largest M/M auction value decreases at 8.77% and 8.54% respectfully, while telescopic boom lifts also showed the most significant Y/Y decrease overall at 20.44%.
