Talking Points Tool: Explaining Stable or Rising Rates Amid Fed Cuts

Purpose: Help small business lenders clearly explain to customers why rates might not be falling as expected despite Federal Reserve rate cuts. Use this guide during conversations to build understanding and trust.

  1. Start with a Simple Explanation
  • What the customer might think:
“I heard the Fed is cutting rates, so shouldn’t loan rates be lower?”
  • How to explain:
“The Fed sets short-term rates that influence the economy, but the rates for loans like equipment or real estate financing are tied to long-term rates. These are influenced by the bond market, not directly by the Fed.”
  1. Address Why Rates Are Stable or Rising
  • Key talking point:
“Right now, the bond market is worried about long-term inflation, even though the Fed is cutting rates. When bond investors expect inflation to stay high, they push up long-term rates to protect their returns. That’s why you might see rates stay stable or even rise, despite what the Fed is doing.”
  1. Connect to the Customer’s Perspective
  • What the customer might ask:
“Why should I borrow now if rates aren’t dropping?”
  • How to explain:
“Waiting for rates to drop could mean missing out on growth opportunities for your business. Even if rates don’t move much, the right financing can help you get ahead now rather than waiting for something uncertain.”
  1. Offer Reassurance and Solutions
  • Key talking point:
“We understand this can feel confusing, but we’re here to help you make the most of financing options available today. Our job is to find competitive rates and structure loans that work with your cash flow and growth plans.”
  1. Emphasize the Big Picture
  • Key talking point:
“Remember, financing isn’t just about the rate. It’s about how the investment will help your business grow. Whether it’s upgrading equipment, expanding operations, or increasing efficiency, the return on your investment is what really matters.”
  1. Call to Action
  • What to say:
“Let’s talk about your goals and explore financing options that make sense for your business today. Rates may not be falling as expected, but smart financing can still help you grow and succeed.”

Optional Analogy for Better Understanding

  • Use this if the customer seems confused:
“Think of it like gas prices. When oil prices drop, you might expect gas to get cheaper right away, but other factors like supply, demand, and refinery costs can keep prices steady. It’s the same with borrowing—there are many moving parts.”

Final Note for Lenders

Stay focused on empathy and education. Many small business owners don’t follow bond markets or understand the connection to loan rates. Your role is to simplify the message and show them how financing, even at stable or higher rates, can still support their success.
