Used Truck Sales Show Resilience Despite Economic Uncertainty

Sales of Class 8 used trucks remained strong in February, rising 12% from the previous month, according to preliminary data from ACT Research. The increase outpaced typical seasonal trends, which historically show a 6% month-over-month gain.

“The market easily outperformed historical seasonality,” said Steve Tam, vice president at ACT Research. “Gains in preliminary auction activity were modest, up 2.2% from January, while wholesale transactions fell 4.9% year over year. Overall, preliminary sales for February strengthened 7.9% month over month.”

The data suggest continued demand for used trucks, even as the industry navigates economic and political uncertainty. “The gain is a testament to the resilience of truckers, but also somewhat counterintuitive given the current challenges they face,” Tam said.

ACT Research’s monthly report tracks key industry indicators, including average selling price, mileage, and vehicle age. It also details the pricing of top-selling Class 8 models from major manufacturers such as Freightliner, Kenworth, Peterbilt, International, Volvo, and Mack. Industry professionals, including commercial vehicle dealers, use the data to assess market conditions and near-term trends.

While broader economic pressures persist, the latest figures suggest that demand for used trucks remains steady, offering a positive signal for the industry.
